Independent reviews. We buy the gear, we do the mileage, we publish the numbers. How we test

Issue 42 · September 2026

The short list of things actually worth buying.

We buy the products, live with them for at least a month, and write down what happened. No sponsored scores, no affiliate links, no twelve-best-options listicles. Just the few that earned a place on the list, and why the rest did not.

Top picks this month

Three products that survived testing and beat everything else we tried in their category. Each one has the full write-up behind it, including the parts we did not like.

Method

How a product gets on the list

Same process for a 15 kettle and a 1,449 laptop. The price of a thing never changes how hard we look at it.

We buy it ourselves

Retail packaging, retail firmware, retail warranty. No review units with cherry-picked samples and no briefings about which features to ignore.

A minimum of 30 days of real use

Long enough for the novelty to wear off and the annoying bits to surface. Every review lists its tested duration, so you know exactly how much we lived with it.

Scored on the same rubric

Five weighted criteria per category, 1 to 10, with the weights published. Two reviewers score independently and we reconcile the gaps before writing.

Re-tested every 12 months

Recommendations expire. If a product loses its edge or the price moves, the score changes and the page says so with a dated note.

Below 7.5 we do not recommend it, whatever the marketing says. Between 7.5 and 8.9 it is a good buy for the right person, and the review says who that is.
